Lottery scams usually involve an unexpected phone call or email informing you that you’ve won a prize or large sum of money.
Scammers will even use the names and logos of legitimate lotteries to make their operation look credible.
If you ever have questions about the legitimacy of lottery-related materials, telephone calls or emails, call the lottery in your jurisdiction and ask for the Security Department.
Here are a few tips to help you avoid lottery scams:
- Do not send money! If you are asked to pay a fee to claim a prize, you are likely being scammed. This includes cashier’s checks, money orders or any type of prepaid card.
- Do not share your personal or financial information. This includes your Social Security number, credit card numbers and bank numbers. Scammers may try to get this information from you by offering to wire “prize money” directly into your bank .
- Lotteries will never you via email or social media to tell you that you’ve won a prize, unless you specifically entered an official lottery promotion or contest.
- Never accept a collect telephone call from someone claiming to be a lottery official. Legitimate lotteries do not call collect.
- Never agree to cash a lottery ticket for a stranger.
